The Golf Mahal

Featuring: Golf Mahal

The first thing that one sees when the bag is closed is what I call the Darth Vader Mask. This is a source of much rejoicing, specifically for coastal and mountain golfers that aren’t afraid to play in the elements, but really for all tournament golfers that have had to play in the rain at one point or another with a bag that didn’t cut the mustard. The lid entirely covers the mouth of the pack and has rain gutters that extend down the sides so as to keep out rain, sleet, or snow (and whatever else Mother Nature might have up here sleeve depending on where you play).

This will keep dry those of your precious children you have chosen to live in the main compartment of the bag, but don’t worry about your babies – they are safe and sound in the rain fly that extends to keep those putters of yours nice and dry, and as an added precaution you can buckle them in at the base of the bag, locking in the rain fly.

Though the Golf Mahal has water bottle pockets on either side that hold even the largest of water bottles/drinking vessels and are … READ MORE >

Prescribed Fire

Featuring: Hot TopHot3

It’s early may in region 3 (Arizona and New Mexico for all you non-forest service folks) – this is the time of year you usually see big wildfires around here.   It’s hot and dry.  The season has been unusually slow though, which is strange since region 3 had an extremely dry winter.  I was expecting to get the call to go somewhere – like the Coronado in southern Arizona (where temp’s are usually above 90 and erratic winds usually make for some big fires)  or the Gila.

So when we found out we were going to go do a prescribed burn up near Hatch I was more than a little surprised.  I was shocked when I heard we were only going to be there for 1 shift. Usually when a hotshot crew does a prescribed burn we are there from start to finish not just for a little piece of it.  I was told we would be there for black-line operations and they would bring a heli-torch in to light the rest.  Black-lining is a process by which a crew will light fire around the edge of a prescribed burn, making a buffer of burned fuels around the perimeter so … READ MORE >

Looking Back at Bridger Bowl

Featuring: Saddle Peak

With spring well on its way and the warm weather turning the landscape from white to green, it seems like a good time to look back on the season. We are fortunate enough to live in a place where our playground is just minutes from home and much of our time this winter was spent exploring this area and investigating new possibilities.

With the addition of Bridger Bowl’s new Schlasman’s chairlift, we were able to easily scout and access some exciting terrain.

In addition to the new inbounds terrain we were also granted open boundaries to the north and south which provided us with lift served access to some really diverse locations. And as always, the camera was along to capture it all.

Thailand Day 26: Chang Mai/Lampang Elephant Conservation Center

Featuring: Snapdragon

This morning we woke up pseudo-early because we had to do some errands and get to our tour for the Elephant Conservation Center.  I had to drop off the scooter and Loni had to get some snacks and water as well as book another night here at TK House.  All of this had to happen before 0800 and it did pretty much.  Our guide that we met from Pooh Eco-Tourism name was Naret.  He grew up in Lampang where the Elephant Conservation Center is located outside of.  We jumped in his personal Isuzu track and drove the 1.5 hours to Lampang.  We were not sure what to expect of the place at all- but it was amazing.

They have about 120 Asian Elephants divided into three groups (riding, show and white).  The show elephants are used to display how the elephants were used in the past to move timber and assist with logging.

The riding elephants for riding and the rare white elephants are partial albino elephants which only 11 of which exist are for the king.  Loni and I went on a short elephant ride through the forest- very cool.  The ride was a lot more topsy turvy than … READ MORE >

Testing my Luck.

Featuring: Sweetpea

Waking up friday morning, I head to my home office to send a few quick emails and do a bit of work before my lazy 9am departure. I’ll be skiing near Marble, CO in a few hours, but need my clients to think I’m happily working first. A quick phone call to one of my favorite clients ends with a disturbing conclusion; “Happy Friday the 13th” she says!

I’m typically a rational person. However, my mother passed one negative trait on to me that I’ve been fighting off most of my life.
I’m prone to occasional bouts of superstition. Combine that with my attempt to be more conservative in the backcountry, and suddenly I’m feeling a bit apprehensive about the day.

Suck it up, Dave!

I’m heading out with a good crew. Skiers and riders I know to be conservative and willing to back down when necessary. Our resident
telemarker is a local guide. We know the area and that we can eek our way safely out. But still, Friday the 13th!

We arrive at the trailhead without incident, “Whew!” Through on our gear, mine being loaded into my Sweet Pea. We ascend into the trees, which confirm the … READ MORE >
